Kent Music Hub meeting

On Friday October 14th the first Kent Music Hub meeting was held in East Malling to look into the future of music education in Kent.

The establishment of music education hubs was one of the recommendations of the Henley review commissioned by the government to assess Music education in the UK earlier this year. A hub is a partnership of organisations that come together to create and co-ordinate music in a region. In our meeting music teachers, peripatetic teachers, professional musicians, arts organisations, schools, colleges, universities and music providers including Kindermusik representatives V Webb (Kindermusik UK/Ireland Director), K De Freitas (Kindermusik Kent ABC representative and educator), A Manca ( Kindermusik International director), met to discuss how we can work together to create a strategy and action plan for Kent.

A key note presentation was given by Marc Jaffrey (OBE) , who in the past championed the Music Manifesto, the successful UK arts education campaign. Having already acted as an independent adviser to ministers in the Department of Education, Marc provided many ideas and insights to guide our discussions. Other motivating speakers included Peter Bolton Chief Executive of Kent Music and Richard Finn Chairman of the Kent Music Board of trustees.

Most of our day was spent in group workshops and Q and A sessions. Our contribution to the Early Year/Primary group was significant as we discussed how Kindermusik has already started being rolled out to schools in Kent with success and should be the model to follow in other schools. In addition in the Digital Strategy workshop the fact that Kindermusik already leads the way with online training, teaching and home materials for children means we are already at the forefront in this area and Kent can build a plan on these learnings.

The day was punctuated by discussions at members stands including our Kindermusik booth and some fantastic solo and group musical performances by the children of Kent.

We are looking forward to follow up meetings integrating recommendations from the National Plan for Music Education due to be published next month as we continue to strengthen Kindermusik’s partnership with Kent Music.

Hi, I am Kathryn de Freitas and my passions are teaching, music and children! My first encounter with the Kindermusik programme was through a friend at the office.When the chance presented itself, my husband and I made the decision for me to opening my own studio and I qualified in November 2007 through Kindermusik South Africa. With a full battery of enthusiasm, I opened my doors in February 2008 - teaching from my lounge. At the end of February, the building of my studio on our premises began witha 4 week project eventually ending in July 2008 when I moved with very few students in to a rather bare studio. Growing weekly and more determined than even, I spent hours preparing lessons, props and so on. By April 2009 I received Maestro status shortly before leaving for the UK.
With our new home in Kent, I have every intention of growing a strong business over the coming months. I have seen plenty of special moments between parent and child and love to be part of the most important stories shared with each visit. But most of all I am blessed with the chance of sharing the gift of music to all who are in my classes.

From today Kindermusik will partner with Sainbury's as part of the Active Kids promotion. This runs from February 11th to June 3rd 2009.

Every time a customer spends £10 or more at their nearest store or online, Sainsbury's will give the customer an Active Kids voucher. This will enable the customer to claim a free activity like Kindermusik by looking at the Sainsbury's website and finding details of their nearest venue. Kindermusik programme ABC music and me to be offered at Busy Bees/Leapfrog nurseries

The award winning ABC music and me programme by Kindermusik will shortly be offered Busy Bees/Leapfrog nurseries, the leading provider of nursery childcare. Kindermusik UK Ltd Director Vanessa Webb said ' we are very excited by this partnership as it means more children will get access to the quality music education provided by Kindermusik'. The programme supports the government EYFS frameworkby teaching children in a comfortable environment, adopting a whole child approach to learning and practising proactive learning through play. Each month a different theme is followed and families receive an ABC music and me homekit including a CD, family activity guide and instrument every other month. Says Vanessa, 'these quality home materials not only ensure learning can continue at home but importantly they keep parents informed of the fun and learning experienced in the music class.We look forward to further developing our partnership with Busy Bees in the future.'

The Long Road to Wembley - A father’s tale of music lessons with my son

With visions of double platinum albums, stadium gigs and early retirement as my motivation we looked at the options to help develop Harrison's musical ability. We found that we had two possible routes we could follow to start our son on this journey, Monkeymusic or Kindermusik. Now neither of these were going to teach Harrison the chord progression to smoke on the water, but would provide him an opportunity to learn some basic things about music, but also spend some time with his dad. We decided to enrol with Kindermusik for a five week course every Saturday morning (in Egham with Mich). Now, Kindermusik was not what I expected, but it didn't matter as this was quality time with my son that I just never got during the working week. The lessons combine music, movement and help develop a number of skills it even teaches relaxation techniques (which Harrison seemed to enjoy nearly as much as I did!). Of course like any toddler his particular favourite activity was playing with the instruments especially the drums and generally anything that made lots of noise! It was great to watch I just don't get to spend much time with Harrison and seeing him as a confident little toddler made me very very proud indeed.I would really recommend Kindermusik, especially for dads that are looking for something a little different to do with their children. It’s a lot more that just another group session for signing nursery rhymes, and Harrison has really enjoyed the approach that the lessons take. So a great thing to do on Saturday mornings, and as its just Harrison and Daddy we get a chance to play AC/DC

Kindermusik by Jan celebrates 10 year birthday!

Kindermusik by Jan has recently celebrated its 10 year birthday. The programme is the largest in the UK reaching over 250 families a week and is offered in Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath, Sussex. Jan Holt, Maestro Kindermusik educator, started teaching in 1998 with around 60 children and later was joined by her husband Scott Holt, who also became the administrator for the company. Demand for classes meant the programme had to offer additional locations and classes and now had a teaching team of 5. I have just returned from a fantastic week in Raleigh Durham, NC, USA where there were International partner meetings and the Kindermusik Convention. Educators in their hundreds met from all over the world to attend presentations, networking and social events and learn about reaching more families with the joy of Kindermusik. Kids have fun at Kindermusik demos in Asda

Despite the rain there was a great turnout for Kindermusik in Asda Farnborough this Sunday. Children and parents had fun in store playing instruments, dancing to the sound of Kindermusik and winning prizes for their efforts.

Vicky Hiorns ( Farnham), Liz Fowler ( Guildford), Mich Mazzocco ( Egham/Sunninghill) and Vanessa Webb ( Camberley/Chobham) offered the free taster sessions as part of Asda Sporting Chance, encouraging children to get more active.

Babies have rhythm

Babies have got rhythm - and that could help pinpoint possible problems, according to academics.

Researchers there discovered that, even at such a tender age, they have a real sense of beat.
Project co-ordinator Dr Susan Denham, of the University of Plymouth, said the findings could be adapted for use in a variety of screening programmes in the future.
"This is one of the first studies of its type and what is perhaps most significant is that, not only do babies' brains register changes in beat, pitch and simple melodic patterns, but they do so more or less automatically, as they are fast asleep during these experiments.
"The results of this study mean that it could be possible to screen children at a much earlier age to identify potential cognitive problems which might lead to poor development."

Music and the brain

Kindermusik is known to help stimulate all aspects of the brain when children participate in class activities. Our well known Development of the brain poster is often posted in our Kindermusik classrooms to help show this to parents. And our famous Foundations of learning statements point specifically to the area of the brain where cognitive, physical, language, emotional and social growth occur. Kindermusik new term begins next week

Next week sees the start of the new Kindermusik term for most teachers. We now have the largest number of Kindermusik teachers ever, teaching throughout the UK, Ireland and Channel Islands. Kindermusik Village (0 to 18m)

Kindermusik Our Time (18m to 3yrs)

Milk and Cookies - empowers the parent to lead the child through familiar, everyday home activities such as cooking, dusting and washing clothes. Baking cookies, eating cupcakes, blowing on hot cross buns, wiggling like jelly, going grocery shopping and making tea are all represented in familiar songs and activities. Double CD, 2 story books, stir xylophone and family activity journal are included in a insulated carry bag.

Kindermusik Imagine That ( 3 to 5 yrs)

In Hello Weather play together! we explore sunshine, rain, snow, thunderstorms, and more in this imaginative and delightful weather related musical adventure. Whether creating snow storms on a drum or throwing pretend snowballs, children and their families are encouraged to get outdoors and enjoy the world around them. Double CD, play set, rainmaker, ankle bells, 2 story books and family activity journal included.

Kindermusik Young Child - (4 1/2 to 7 yrs)

Semesters 1 to 4 - the programme lays the foundations for future musical learning, teaching the glockenspiel, dulcimer and recorder, reading and writing music and musical fun activities from all over the world. Home materials include instrument, home activity cards, stickers, folder, songbook and cd.

Kindermusik Family Time (0 to 7 yrs)

Here, There and Everywhere—includes five sub-themes centre around different family outings: a visit with a friend, an outing at the park, a trip to the city, an afternoon at the aquarium, and a day on the farm. Home Materials include 2 Books—Flip-Flap, Sugar Snap! and Jingle-Jangle Jambourine, 2 Home CDs, Family Guide, Board Game, Waggs the dog Hand Puppet and Finger Puppet, and 2 Jambourine instruments.

Kindermusik ABC Music and Me (2 to 6 yrs)

Monthly themes - for the child enrolled in pre-schools, nuseries and childcare centres, , ABC Music & Me is a research-based language and early literacy programme built around music. ABC Music & Me helps children 2 to 4s, and 4 to 6s develop pre-literacy and language skills through a child’s most-loved rituals: music and story time. Example themes include Carnival of Music, Animals are Dancing, Around the farm and home materials include magazine, CD and instrument. Hello everyone and welcome to the Kindermusik UK and Ireland blog.

The intention of this blog is share a broad range of thoughts, ideas and learnings related to Kindermusik in the UK and Ireland from childhood development benefits of music right through to how Kindermusik is expanding in the region. Everyone is welcome to contribute from Kindermusik educators through to Kindermusik families and any other Kindermusik enthusiasts.

Kindermusik is the world's leading music and movement programme for 0 to 7 year olds with over 6000 educators in 66 countries. Kindermusik prides itself on the high quality teaching and home materials provided and as its not a franchise starting up a Kindermusik business involves a relatively low investement.

I have had the pleasure of teaching Kindermusik for the last 6 and half years and seen the joy and magic that Kindermusik can bring to hundreds of families. I believe it aids all aspects of child development whilst being a fun introduction to music for young ones. As the Area Developer for Kindermusik in the UK and Ireland I am keen to replicate this success in other areas. In fact in the last 4 years our company has grown to around 110 licenced educators throughout England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Channel Islands. And we have many more in training.
